Vedic Mathematics - lightning fast calculations!

Various of my Mathematics teachers and instructors have guided me to go for Vedic Mathematics for "lightning fast calculations". It is said that this is a traditional method, which needs lots and lots of practice. But if you are able to grasp it, calculations of roots and powers are as simple as addition and subtraction! I have been trying to get a book on it, but I have been unable to get one.

Have you gone through that? Any ideas or guess over how it really is?

I have read something about it . it basically contains 16 fomulas and this vedic mathematic concept was introduced in 20th century by a hindu scholar. If i am not wrong.
